Endodontic Microsurgery
in Belmont, NC

What is endodontic microsurgery?

In the event that root canal treatment or retreatment does not result in complete healing, your tooth may require microsurgery, or an apicoectomy. This procedure goes beyond the space of the original root canal treatment, into the bone surrounding the tooth. Dr. Taggar is one of the few endodontists who is an expert in this specific surgery! Belmont Endodontics is proud to be able to offer microsurgery, when necessary. Dr. Taggar will use a special advanced dental operating microscope to complete this procedure in order to prevent any further infection. This minor surgery is an alternative to an extraction, and can help maintain your natural tooth!

The Endodontic Microsurgery Process

ANESTHESIA & ACCESS

After ensuring you have adequate anesthesia, the first step of endodontic microsurgery is to access the affected area of the tooth. This is typically done by making a small incision in the gum tissue to expose the non healing area and associated root tips.

CLEANING & SEALING

Dr. Taggar will then use specialized equipment to carefully clean and disinfect the area, removing any infected tissue and the tip of the affected roots. The remaining roots will be inspected under the dental operating microscope for any defects that may prevent further healing of the tooth. Dr. Taggar will place a hand selected biocompatible filling at the end of the remaining roots to ensure a proper seal to your surgical site.

CLOSURE & RECOVERY

The final step of endodontic microsurgery is to close the incision in the gum tissue and allow the area to heal. This typically involves placement of several small sutures. We will review your post operative instructions at your visit so you can be confident in what to expect at home. Dr. Taggar also makes himself available to you for questions after your visit! You will then need to return for suture removal about one week later. We will want to schedule follow-up care to monitor your healing process.
