Root Canal Treatmentin Belmont, NC
What is Root Canal Treatment?
The inside of the tooth, called the dental pulp, is made of nerves and blood vessels. The dental pulp may become inflamed or infected because of decay, cracks, trauma or repeated dental work. Your root canal treatment will remove the inflamed and infected dental pulp, and ensures that you are able to maintain your natural tooth and smile!

The Root Canal Treatment Process
CONSULTATION & DIAGNOSIS
Before you undergo any treatment, a thorough clinical and radiographic evaluation will be completed. Belmont Endodontics has a convenient in-house CBCT machine to keep your care under one roof! Using the image and your physical exam, Dr. Taggar will determine the issue with your tooth. All treatment options will be presented to you so you can be in charge of decision making. If endodontic treatment is recommended, an individualized care plan will be discussed with you in detail. Dr. Taggar will examine your mouth and review any X-rays or other images to diagnose the cause of your toothache. If the cause turns out to be a tooth infection or inflammation, Dr. Taggar will determine the extent of the damage and decide if root canal therapy can treat the problem.
CLEANING AND DISINFECTION
If you end up needing root canal treatment, a local anesthetic will be used to numb up your area of concern. Various additional sedation options are available to ensure your comfort throughout the appointment. Once you’re comfortable and fully numbed, Dr. Taggar will begin the process of removing the irritated or damaged nerve tissue. The canals will be cleaned with special instruments and disinfectants.
FILLING & SEALING
Once your tooth has been completely cleaned and disinfected, the interior will be filled. Belmont Endodontics uses only a very safe and biocompatible filling material to help your body adapt and heal the area. Next, a temporary restoration will be placed on top of the area on the tooth to keep the root canal safe. You will then need to see your general dentist who will place a permanent cover. This follow up is important to ensure proper healing of the tooth!

Root canal therapy is required if your tooth becomes infected, which most often happens one of two ways: A serious cavity can eat away at the outer layers of your enamel and dentin until it reaches the pulp. Once the pulp, which is responsible for keeping your tooth alive, is exposed, it becomes vulnerable to bacteria and becomes infected. Dental trauma that cracks or chips a tooth can expose the nerve and blood vessel-filled pulp to oral bacteria. If left untreated, either situation will lead to the infection, decay, and eventual death of your tooth’s pulp. When the infection starts to take hold, you’ll likely begin experiencing an array of symptoms like a toothache, inflamed gums near the tooth, and tooth sensitivity.
No! Having pain during throughout the procedure is a common misconception. Contemporary root canal treatment is completed in a calming environment with an emphasis on personalized pain control.
Dr. Taggar will ensure that your tooth is adequately numb before starting the procedure. We will strive to continue to keep you comfortable throughout your appointment.
Root canals are one of most successful and effective procedures in dentistry. However, a small number of teeth may not heal completely.
Following back up with your general dentist is one thing you can do to help the treatment’s success. A temporary filling will often be placed by Dr. Taggar at the conclusion of your root canal treatment. You will need to schedule a follow up for a permanent filling and crown with your general dentist. This aftercare step is important to prevent a re-infection of your root canal site from bacteria in your mouth.
If non healing is observed either by your dentist or our office, further treatment may become necessary. Based on the source of the non healing, appropriate personalized and evidence based treatment will be recommended.
Root canal treatments are highly effective! Root canal treatments have a success rate of 95%, and Dr. Taggar is highly trained to optimize your tooth’s outcome. After a thorough evaluation, Dr. Taggar will be able to inform you of the prognosis of your personal case.
Root canal therapy is usually covered, at least in part, by most dental insurance plans. However, it’s always a good idea to get in touch with your insurance provider to gain a thorough understanding of your benefits, and to find out what type of treatments are covered.
